Data Literacy in the use of Catholic Social Teaching
Helen Alford
The Faculty of Social Sciences at the PUST/Angelicum launched the project “Putting Catholic Social Teaching into Practice” in April 2024, with an opening conference under the title: “Can we Measure How Well We are Doing?”, available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1xcmeXZKR8&t=8815s
The project aims to bring Catholic Social Teaching (CST) into dialogue with the major social problems and issues of our day, using resources from the modern social sciences to create tools to promote the dialogue.
After the first conference, the project has focused on a key issue in view of the upcoming “Financing for Development” conference to be held in Seville June 30-July 1 2025: providing a solid theoretical framework drawn from CST on the basis of which to decide which sustainable development goals (SDGs) to prioritise in the face of severe resource constraints. It has also aimed to stimulate the development of CST-inspired metrics to measure how well we are doing.
The papers presented here were developed for the second “Putting Catholic Social Teaching into Practice” conference: “The Order of Charity as Guide: Balancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to Prioritize the Greatest Needs”, which was held in February 2025 and available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OO7UpCvevCU&t=2043s
