English

The author presents an alternative method for remunerating capital loaned to an enterprise from that of the usual system of interest payments. Basically, this involves the lender sharing in the profits and losses of the enterprise by a certain agreed percentage. This leads to more responsible lending, since it encourages the lender to get to know the people and the projects he is financing. In speaking about the kind of solidarity on which this system of finance is based, the author draws on the examples of the 19th founders of mutual aid societies in Germany. Some of the practical aspects of the Profit and Loss Sharing system are presented. A simulation of the results of an enterprise under three different scenarios is included, where one set of results are generated on the basis of a classic loan and the other on the basis of the PLS concept. Particularly in a scenario where the enterprise experiences unexpected problems, the results show that the enterprise is more able to recover and stay in business with a loan based on the PLS concept than in the case of the classic loan. In particular, a loan based on this concept protects the borrower from changes in interest rates that have nothing to do with his activities. The author considers how savers, lenders and borrowers could be motivated to use such a system.

English

After the Second World War, Giuseppe Lazzati was one of the key figures in creating a culture of political involvement among Catholics, although he himself did not feel called to be a politician. In this article, his intellectual contribution is discussed, and in particular, how he draws upon but also goes beyond Maritain. With Maritain, he saw that political parties of Christian inspiration were needed, rather than Catholic parties, and that there was an important distinction between the work of “Catholic Action”, aiding the bishops in their mission of evangelisation, and that of Christians in politics. These represent two distinct but not separate fields of activity. This thinking lead to controversy in the newly-founded Christian democrat party after the War, where some did not want to accept the autonomy of Christian political action from hierarchical (episcopal) control. At the same time, they had to battle against those who wanted to separate Catholicism from politics. Although the journal, Cronache Sociali, of the group to which Lazzati belonged, i dossettiani, did not often carry articles with explicit connections to Maritain, a few key articles by Lazzati are clearly based on Maritain’s thought. Lazzati adopts a Thomistic view of politics, and the article discusses his political theory, including its fundamentally “lay” character and the need for the lay Christian to “mediate” between the field of faith and that of politics using the virtue of prudence and dialogue as the means. For this to be possible the Christian needs to recognise the primacy of the spiritual in his or her life and that his or her political commitment depends upon contemplation of the divine. According to Lazzati, a “political society” is one that creates the “human city on a human scale”, a phrase which the article explores.

Job Design in the Perspective of Laborem Exercens

Helen Alford

Italiano

English

In the twentieth anniversary year of the Pope’s encyclical on work, the author goes back to it to see what principles as regards the design of jobs can be drawn from it and how these compare with job design approaches in industry. Five key elements are identified from the encyclical, of which the most practically important are that the human person should experience dominion over the created order in his or her work and that technology is to serve the human worker, not the other way around. Classical job design principles, however, regard maximising profit (or return on capital employed) as the main objective, and almost always end up instrumentalising the worker to this end (even in more modern and moderate forms). However, alternative systems, such as “human-centred” job design have been devised, and the author considers one of these in comparison to the principles taken from Laborem Exercens. Finally, the author considers the question as to whether work will remain the “key to the social question”, as John Paul II calls it. The answer, according to the author, depends on what definition of “the social question” is used.

[46
post-1000","articolo","type-articolo","status-publish","hentry","fascicolo-ottobre-2001

Oikonomia - SOMMARI / ABSTRACTS - Ottobre 2001
